Do Bed Bugs Live in Leather Furniture?

I’m worried my leather couch could have bed bugs. Can bed bugs hide on leather furniture in the seams or cushions?

Yes, bed bugs can live and hide in leather couches and chairs. While leather isn’t a food source or a preferred nesting material, bed bugs love to hide around seams, stitching, cushion edges, creases, crevices, and underneath the furniture.

Smooth leather offers fewer hiding places than heavily upholstered fabric furniture, although tufting, loose cushions, nailhead trim, recliner mechanisms, and the frame beneath the leather can provide hiding spots.

You’re more likely to find them in gaps and cracks of fabric couches, chairs, beds, and in box springs. They can also hide in bed linen, clothes, behind headboards, picture frames, and mirrors. 

If you suspect bed bugs, leather and other furniture should be carefully inspected with a flashlight. Look for live insects, shed skins, tiny pale eggs, or dark spotting. Avoid moving the furniture to another room, as you could spread the problem.
