How to Get Rid of Roaches

Smarter Answers

Several customers have spotted cockroaches around the premises. What can we do to get rid of roaches?

The best way to get rid of roaches is to combine a professional inspection and targeted treatment with preventive measures: removing food and water, and eliminating hiding places. Repeated customer sightings need prompt attention because cockroaches can contaminate food and surfaces, lead to inspection violations, and potentially damage your business’s reputation.

It also helps to understand which cockroach species is invading your premises and where they are hiding. Some breed indoors around warm equipment, while others enter from outdoor areas or drains. Cleaning alone may not eliminate an established infestation.

You can also do the following while arranging and waiting for professional help:

  • Record cockroach sightings: Note locations, dates, and times. Take photographs to help your technician identify the cockroaches.
  • Remove food sources: Clean crumbs, spills, and grease, including accessible areas beneath equipment. Store ingredients in sealed containers.
  • Control moisture: Repair leaking pipes and faucets, address condensation, and avoid leaving wet cleaning equipment overnight.
  • Reduce shelter: Remove unnecessary cardboard and clutter. Repair gaps around pipes, walls, and doors.
  • Manage waste and deliveries: Keep trash covered, keep bins clean, and check incoming cartons and equipment for pest activity.

Ask your pest professional about targeted baits, crack-and-crevice treatments, and monitoring traps. Avoid foggers and indiscriminate spraying, which may miss hidden cockroaches and contaminate exposed items. Never apply pesticides to food-contact surfaces unless the label specifically permits that use.

Follow the preparation and cleaning instructions, have staff report and record new sightings, and schedule follow-up checks. Fewer visible roaches do not necessarily mean the infestation has been eliminated.
