The Difference Between Carpenter Ants and Termites

They look similar, and both thrive in the Carolina’s humid climate, but by understanding their differences it’s easier to identify them, which is important as they are both experts at hiding and can cause structural damage to buildings.

Carpenter Ant

• Appearance — usually black; narrow, pinched waist; bent “elbowed” antennae; front wings bigger than the back wings
• Habitat — prefers moist/decaying wood initially, then may expand into dry wood
• Behavior — doesn’t eat wood: hollows it out to create smooth, clean nest galleries
• Risks — can weaken wooden buildings

Termite

• Appearance — thick straight body with no waist; straight, bead-like antennae, four wings of equal length/shape, creamy translucent body
• Habitat — lives in soil. To reach wood it builds mud tubes along walls
• Behavior —  actively eats wood, creating ragged galleries filled with mud/debris
• Risks — can weaken wooden buildings

Signs of an Infestation

Hear rustling noises in walls or ceilings as they tunnel through wood. Spot winged swarmers in spring/ early summer. Carpenter ants leave behind piles of sawdust-like debris (frass), often containing dead insects. Termites build mud tubes along walls or leave discarded wings near light sources.

Prevention Tips

Manage moisture: fix leaky pipes and faucets, clear gutters and keep firewood/mulch 20+ft from your building. Manage the outside: trim branches by your walls, keep plants away from foundation vents and weep holes.
