They can continue to transmit West Nile Virus (WNV) and breed throughout September and October due to the mild weather and prolonged humidity. So mosquito control and ongoing monitoring are still important as temperatures begin to cool. Only a sustained deep freeze typically ends all mosquito activity across the region.

Mosquito-Borne Diseases and Late-Season Bite Prevention

In the United States, mosquitoes transmit not only West Nile Virus but also Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Zika, and Dengue viruses, as well as other pathogens, like dog heartworms. 

Most of these illnesses don’t have specific vaccines or treatments, so bite prevention throughout the fall is crucial:

• Use insect repellents that are Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered
• Use IR3535, picaridin, DEET, or lemon/ eucalyptus oil to repel mosquitoes
• Wear close-toed shoes, long pants, plus light-coloured, loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts
• Repair window and door screens, and keep doors shut
• Avoid being outside between dusk and dawn
• Use barrier screens on windows, doors, and air conditioning systems
• Unclog drains, ditches, and gutters, and remove unneeded water containers
• Get rid of cans, buckets, old tires, and anything else that can hold water
• Apply larvicides or mosquito dunks to small areas of standing water

Protecting Pollinators and the Local Environment

Adulticides: Adult mosquitoes are targeted with Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) adulticides sprayed into the air at night. Night-time treatment serves two purposes: it minimizes disruption for residents and coincides with the period when mosquitoes are most active. It also protects pollinators and other beneficial insects resting in trees and dense vegetation. The spray leaves no residue, so pets, animals, and crops are not harmed.

Ahead of treatment, local beekeepers and the local emergency management team are notified via social media.

Larvicides: Where standing water cannot be drained, such as storm drains, retention ponds, and similar sources, we apply larvicides instead. These prevent mosquito larvae from developing into adults.
