How to Get Rid of Gnats

Smarter Answers

We're dealing with a lot of gnats on the restaurant patio currently. How can we get rid of them?

“Gnats” can describe several small flies, including fungus gnats, fruit flies, and biting midges. Identifying the insect helps determine which action will work.

To get rid of gnats, start by removing their breeding sources. Reduce excess moisture and use outdoor fans to help keep them away from diners. Spraying visible insects alone will not resolve an ongoing breeding problem.

Check these common sources and attractants:

  • Damp planters: Avoid overwatering, improve drainage, and empty water from saucers. Allow the soil surface to dry between waterings (where plant care permits).
  • Food and drink residue: Clear tables promptly, wipe up beer and soda spills, and remove fallen fruit or discarded garnishes.
  • Trash and recycling: Keep trash cans covered, clean sticky residue from containers, and remove waste regularly.
  • Wet organic debris: Clear decaying leaves, clogged gutters, and other damp material around the patio.
  • Dirty drains: If flies gather near drains, remove the organic buildup rather than relying on surface sprays.
  • Outdoor lighting: Consider replacing white lightbulbs with yellow bug bulbs to reduce attraction to flying insects near seating and entrances.

Fans can provide temporary relief, especially from weak-flying biting midges. However, vinegar traps target certain flies, particularly fruit flies—but not every insect called a gnat.

If activity continues or guests report bites, ask a pest professional to identify the species and locate breeding sites. Nearby wetlands or waterways may be the source, so complete elimination may not be practical.
