How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes

Smarter Answers

Mosquitoes are causing havoc for customers dining outside. How can we get rid of them?

Mosquitoes are attracted to standing water, which supports them in breeding. To get rid of mosquitoes, remove standing water and reduce possible sheltered resting areas. Persistent problems may also require targeted mosquito treatment for larvae or adult mosquitoes. Spraying alone will not stop new mosquitoes from developing in untreated water.

For restaurants, hotels, and other commercial properties, inspect outdoor seating areas, landscaping, loading areas, and maintenance spaces. Even small containers can hold enough water to support mosquito development.

Start with these steps:

  • Remove standing water: At least weekly, empty and scrub buckets, planter saucers, and other water-holding containers. Turn over unused equipment and check tarps for trapped rainwater.
  • Maintain drainage: Clear blocked gutters and address pooling caused by leaks, irrigation, or poor drainage. Recheck problem areas after rain.
  • Manage resting areas: Trim overgrown shrubs and maintain landscaping around patios and entrances. Mosquitoes shelter in dark, humid locations, including beneath outdoor furniture.
  • Protect occupied spaces: Repair window and door screens, avoid propping doors open, and use outdoor fans to help reduce mosquito activity around seating.
  • Treat water appropriately: Where water cannot be emptied or covered, ask a pest professional whether a labeled larvicide is suitable. Do not add pesticides to ponds or drains without checking permitted uses.

Any adult mosquito treatment should follow label directions and protect food, customers, pollinators, and nearby water.

If activity continues, arrange a professional inspection. Effective control combines regular property maintenance, monitoring, and treatment rather than promising a permanently mosquito-free site.
