How to Get Rid of Silverfish

Smarter Answers

How can we get rid of the silverfish in our warehouses?

Silverfish are wingless insects with tapered, silvery bodies, long antennae, and three tail-like appendages. They are drawn to moisture and usually hide during the day. In commercial buildings, check dark storage areas, restrooms, kitchens, basements, and spaces behind shelving.

To get rid of silverfish, try to reduce excess moisture where possible, remove food sources and clutter, and seal cracks where they could hide. Persistent infestations may also need targeted professional treatment. Simply killing individual silverfish will not address the conditions that attract and support them.

Here are some preventive tips for managing issues with silverfish:

  • Reduce moisture: Repair plumbing leaks, address condensation, and improve ventilation. Use dehumidification where appropriate, especially in damp storage rooms.
  • Protect stored materials: Replace unnecessary cardboard boxes with tightly sealed plastic containers. Keep important documents and vulnerable stock dry and protected.
  • Remove food sources: Vacuum along baseboards, beneath shelving, and inside storage cupboards. Clear crumbs, dust, dead insects, and unwanted paper.
  • Seal hiding places: Close accessible cracks around baseboards, pipe penetrations, and door or window frames.
  • Inspect incoming items: Check cardboard cartons, books, and paper supplies for insects before moving them into storage.

Avoid applying household sprays or loose insecticidal powders around food, documents, or merchandise. Any pesticide must be suitable for the location and used according to its label.

If sightings continue or materials show damage, arrange a professional inspection to identify hiding places and develop a treatment and prevention plan.
