If you find holes in your clothes, the chances are that moths are the culprits. Moth clothing damage has several telltale signs. The holes aren’t round and have no tears or pulling. They often look like a series of tiny pin-sized jagged punctures or larger irregular ‘grazed’ patches with clean edges where the fabric appears sheer, thinned out or ‘shaved’. They’re often in clusters under collars, cuffs, folds and other less disturbed areas.
Other signs include tiny cream moth larvae: these moths-to-be do the damage to clothes when they hatch. Or you may spot silky cobweb-like cocoons the size of dried rice; sand-like droppings (frass); or adult moths fluttering around closets and fabrics.
Moths are picky: they love luxury, natural fabrics. So they prefer fur, silk, wool, including cashmere and merino, plus even feathers. Finding moths can be tricky. So check in drawers, closets and dark, undisturbed areas; under folded clothes and along hems, seams, folds, and linings.
Identification of moth holes in clothes is important as they may be caused by something else. Cats or catching fabrics on sharp objects or zippers can cause holes, but a pull or stretching is more likely. With washing machines and dryers, the holes often look stressed. Carpet beetles can eat fabric, but the thinning is more widespread, plus they usually leave shed skins.
Have you seen signs of moths? Then you’re not just looking at old clothes; you’re looking at an active infestation. In commercial settings, this can devastate your textile inventory: early detection means protection, before the damage spreads from one shelf to the entire closet.
