When most people think of termites, they picture a small, pale, ant-like insect—and that's not far off, but the details matter. Worker termites are soft-bodied, creamy white to light brown, and about a quarter to half an inch long. Swarmers (the winged reproductive termites) are darker, sometimes almost black. They have two pairs of equal-length wings that they shed after mating. Finding discarded wings on windowsills, curtains, or floors is one of the most common early signs of an infestation.
The tricky part is that there are several bugs that look like termites, including ants, especially flying ants. There are some key differences: termites have straight antennae, a thick waist, and wings of equal length, while ants have elbowed antennae, a pinched waist, and unequal wings. Termites look like small pale workers when they're in the wood, but swarmers are what most people notice first since they emerge in groups, often near windows and light sources.
If you're seeing live insects, shed wings, or small mud tubes along walls or foundations, don't wait. Termite damage builds up fast, and by the time it's visible, the problem is usually well established. That’s why getting an inspection if you suspect a termite problem is a very smart move.
